The two digits, what each level covers, and the mated-pair condition that every waterproof rating depends on.

IP Ratings on Circular Connectors: What IP50, IP67 and IP68 Actually Guarantee

An IP code has two digits after the letters. The first digit grades protection against solids and touch; the second grades protection against water. On a connector, both digits describe the shell, the seals and the latching mechanism working together β€” and both only count when the connector is used the way the rating assumes.

First digit: solids

DigitProtection level
0None
1Solids > 50 mm, palm contact
2Solids > 12.5 mm, finger contact
3Solids > 2.5 mm, tools and wire
4Solids > 1 mm, screws and small insects
5Dust β€” does not interfere with operation
6Dust-tight β€” no ingress

Second digit: water

DigitProtection level
0None
1Vertical dripping water
2Dripping water at a 15Β° tilt
3Spray up to 60Β° from vertical
4Splashing water from any direction
5Low-pressure jets from any direction
6High-pressure jets from any direction
7Short immersion, 1 m for 30 minutes
8Continuous immersion under agreed conditions

Reading the series on this site

  • B, F and P Series are indoor lines rated IP50 when mated: dust cannot interfere with operation, but they are not sealed against water. The B Series TEG plug adds an O-ring at the mating face for dusty front panels.
  • K and T Series are waterproof lines reaching IP66–IP68, using thread and O-ring sealing β€” the K Series TGG straight plug and the micro-sized T Series TGG plug.
  • W Series is the underwater high-pressure line rated IP68, as on the W Series TGG straight plug and its ZGG fixed socket.

The condition every rating assumes

A waterproof rating applies when the male plug and female socket are fully aligned, fully mated and locked with the contact faces completely closed. The rating does not hold when the halves are separated, half-mated, or installed with gaps in the assembly β€” in those states the contact cavity has an ingress path. Before deploying a sealed pair outdoors or in wash-down areas, check that both ends latch completely and inspect the sealing rings for ageing, deformation or damage as part of routine service.

Practical selection

  1. Indoor panel, dust only: IP50 lines keep cost and size down.
  2. Outdoor or splash-exposed: IP66–IP68 lines with O-ring and thread sealing.
  3. Submersion or high-pressure wash-down: W Series IP68, and confirm the agreed immersion conditions for your application.

Tell us the environment β€” indoor, outdoor, wash-down or submersed β€” and we will match the series and sealing design to it.
